What is the Average UPS Workers’ Compensation Claim?*

If you have been involved in an accident while employed by UPS and you have been injured enough to need to recover before returning to work, you may be eligible to file a claim for workers’ compensation.

UPS (which stands for United Parcel Service) was created in 1907 in Seattle, Washington. Now it is one of the world’s leading shipping companies. Due to its size, it will have workers’ compensation insurance for its employees to cover sickness and accidents when the employee is unable to work.

The Value of a Claim

It is never that easy to win a WC claim as the UPS insurer takes its time assessing the value of the claim which includes:

  • the diagnosis of the injury;
  • the potential recovery time;
  • medical treatment costs;
  • the cost of lost wages for the period the injured employer can’t work.

UPS workers’ compensation insurance should cover all your medical treatment as well as 66 percent of your average wage. These are required under federal workers’ compensation laws, but some states have their own laws in place too.

If the injury means you will never be able to go back to the same UPS job you may be offered the opportunity to retrain.

An Example of a UPS Workers’ Compensation Settlement

A UPS delivery driver was driving through a green light when another vehicle struck the van on the side causing damage to the driver’s door and a shoulder injury to the driver.

It took 6 weeks for the delivery driver to recover return to work and he was eligible for workers’ compensation from the UPS WC insurer.

The value of the workers’ compensation claim is:

  • Ambulance = $1,000
  • Emergency room diagnosis = $500
  • 2 X-Rays of the injured area at $150 each = $300
  • Medical treatment = $2,000
  • Physical therapy for 2 hours per week @ $75 per hour for 6 weeks = $900.
  • Total = $ 4,700.

The average weekly wage for a UPS delivery driver for 40 hours per week is $1,600. The workers’ compensation payment includes 2/3rds of this amount which is $1,160 per week. The total payment for 6 weeks is $ 6,960. The workers’ comp. total payment is $6,960 + $4, 700 for medical treatment = a total of $11,660.

Tips for Your UPS Workers’ Compensation Settlement

One of the most important factors related to ensuring a successful UPS WC claim is making available the evidence proving the injury took place while you were on a delivery job. Evidence may include the following:

  • a copy of the accident report compiled by the police you sent to the UPS HR;
  • surveillance camera footage recovered at the traffic lights;
  • receipts for all medical treatment;
  • receipt for the ambulance trip;
  • written statements provided by co-workers.
