Who is Covered Under Marriott’s Workers’ Compensation?*

With the huge boost in travel in recent years more and more workers are attracted to working in the hospitality industry, such as in hotels like the Marriott. There are lots of different kinds of jobs, but not all are necessarily that safe and accidents do happen. Fortunately, in most states, the Marriott has to cover its workers for workers’ compensation, so if an accident takes place the injured worker does not have to face financial hardship while being treated and going through the recovery process.

Who is Covered Under Marriott’s Workers’ Compensation?

Most full time and part time workers come under the Marriott’s workers’ compensation insurance. Casual labor is covered as long as they are being paid to do the job. The main criterion for eligibility to receive workers’ compensation is that the accident happened while the worker was on the Marriott’s premises working in the capacity as an employee.

As long as the injured worker has followed all the required deadlines, being eligible to receive workers’ compensation should take place. One of the deadlines often overlooked is reporting the accident to the supervisor at Marriott’s. Often, only 24 hours is given to do this. Statutes of limitation are imposed by states which do vary and a worker has to get a WC claim in before these limits which could be anything from 14 days to 12 months.

Who is not Covered Under Marriott’s Workers’ Compensation?

There are some workers who are not covered by Marriott’s workers’ compensation and they include:

  • volunteers who are not being paid to do a job but help out voluntarily;
  • an employee who is employed by the Marriott who has a car accident on the way to work and has to take time off to recover;
  • employees who have failed to meet the required deadlines for filing a WC claim;
  • employees who had an accident on the way to work won’t be eligible for workers’ comp. payments.
  • a contractor who has come from outside like a plumber will not be eligible for workers’ comp. from the Marriott’s insurer and will only get financial help if they have taken out their own worker’s comp. cover or if they are employed by a contracting company they may be covered under that company’s WC insurance.
